SUMMER SKIN CARE TIPS

As summer rolls in with its signature warmth and sunshine, it’s crucial to adapt our skin care routines to combat the unique challenges this season presents. Increased temperatures and higher levels of UV radiation can take a toll on your skin, making hydration and protection more important than ever. Here are some essential tips to keep your skin looking radiant and healthy all summer long.

1. Stay Hydrated

Hydration is key in summer, not just for your body but also for your skin. Drinking plenty of water will help maintain your skin’s moisture balance and aid in overall health. A well-hydrated body can more efficiently flush out toxins and improve skin elasticity.

2. Use Sunscreen Religiously

Sunscreen isn’t just for the beach. Applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30 every day is essential to protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays. Reapply every two hours, especially if you are spending extended time outdoors. Don’t forget areas like your ears, feet, and the back of your neck.

3. Opt for Lighter Skin Care Products

Thick creams can feel heavy and clog pores in the heat. Switch to lighter lotions and serums. Products containing hyaluronic acid are particularly good in summer as they help retain moisture without adding oiliness.

4. Exfoliate Regularly

Exfoliation is beneficial as it removes dead cells from the surface of your skin, preventing congestion and improving hydration from toners and moisturizers. However, it’s important to not over-exfoliate as this can lead to skin irritation, especially when combined with increased sun exposure.

5. Incorporate Antioxidants

Using skin care products with antioxidants like vitamin C or E can help protect the skin from environmental damage. These antioxidants help neutralize harmful free radicals and can also contribute to skin brightness and firmness.

6. Cool Down with a Mist

Facial mists are perfect for a quick refresh during the day. They not only cool you down but can also offer extra hydration and skin soothing benefits if they contain ingredients like aloe vera or thermal water.

7. Treat Your Skin Overnight

Nighttime is when your skin goes into repair mode. Using overnight masks or hydrating serums can significantly improve your skin’s ability to regenerate.

8. Watch Your Diet

Your skin reflects what you eat. Incorporate a diet rich in fruits and vegetables, which are high in antioxidants and hydrating elements. Avoid heavy, oily foods as they can make your skin more prone to breakouts during hotter months.

9. Seek Shade and Wear Protective Clothing

Sometimes, the best way to protect your skin is to stay out of the sun altogether, especially during peak hours between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Wearing hats, sunglasses, and long sleeves can provide additional protection.

10. Regularly Cleanse Your Skin

Summer means sweat, and sweat can trap dirt and oil on the skin. Cleanse your skin twice a day to keep it fresh and prevent acne flare-ups. Avoid using hot water as it can strip your skin of essential oils and hydration.

Following these summer skin care tips will help you maintain a healthy glow and protect your skin from the seasonal challenges. Remember, healthy skin is not just about appearance but also about overall well-being.

The Power of Peptides

If you’re looking to slow the aging process, make peptides your new best friends.

Scientifically speaking, our skin is mostly comprised of collagen, which is a protein that keeps the skin supple. Proteins are made up of long chains of amino acids, and if you break down those long chains into smaller fragments, the fragments are known as peptides. (more…)

Benefits of Calendula

Calendula (Calendula officinalis), also called marigold, is a flowering plant that has been used for healing purposes since the 12th century. It grows naturally around southeastern Asia, Mediterranean, and western Europe. Its petals are packed with antioxidants that are effective in helping treat diseases, and skin conditions. (more…)

The Naughty List

The holidays are definitely a time to indulge. Between the holiday parties, family dinners and irresistible sweet treats set out in the office kitchen, this is the time of year when we can all take a well-deserved break from the kale, smoothies and grilled chicken that we turn to during the rest of the year.

But while our holiday diets may include some less than ideal ingredients, this philosophy should not be applied to skincare.

Many beauty and skincare products on the market are filled with chemicals and other harsh ingredients that can inflame, break out and dry out your skin. Some may even cause cancer.

At PureCeuticals, we take pride in our safe, all-natural, non-toxic ingredients that your skin will love. In addition to skincare products, you may also shop for the essentials of builder gel preparation and nail polish.

In the New Year, make a resolution to be kind to yourself and your skin. Just say “NO” to the following ingredients on our skincare naughty list:

  1. BHA and BHT

Used mainly in moisturizers and makeup as preservatives, BHA is a suspected endocrine disruptor that may cause cancer.

  1. Coal Tar Dyes

Look for p-phenylenediamine in hair dyes and in other products. Colors are listed as “CI” followed by five digits. The U.S. color name may also be listed (e.g. “FD&C Blue No. 1” or “Blue 1”). These ingredients could cause cancer and may be contaminated with heavy metals toxic to the brain.

  1. DEA-Related Ingredients

Emulsifiers, pH adjusters and foaming agents in shampoo, soaps and cosmetics, DEA-elated ingredients can react to form nitrosamines, which may cause cancer. Also watch out for related chemicals MEA and TEA.

  1. EDTA (Ethylenediaminetetraacetic), Tetrasodium EDTA, Disodium EDTA

Binders in skin, hair and body care; these ingredients are potential formaldehyde (carcinogen) releasers.

  1. Formaldehyde-Releasing Preservatives

Look for DMDM hydantoin, diazolidinyl urea, imidazolidinyl urea, methenamine and quarternium-15. All are used in a variety of cosmetics and slowly release small amounts of formaldehyde, which causes cancer.

  1. Methylisothiazolinone, Methylchloroisothiazolinone

These preservatives in make-up and skin, body, and hair care products are skin irritants and possible neurotoxins.

  1. Mineral Oil

This petroleum-based conditioning agent and solvent found in make-up, skincare, body and hair care products could clog pores and inhibit cell renewal.

  1. Parabens

Used in a variety of cosmetics as preservatives, parabens are suspected endocrine disrupters and may interfere with male reproductive functions.

  1. Parfum (a.k.a. fragrance)

Parfum can be any mixture of fragrance ingredients used in a variety of cosmetics — even in some products marketed as “unscented.” Some fragrance ingredients can trigger allergies and asthma, and some have been linked to cancer and neurotoxicity.

  1. PEG compounds (Propylene glycols)

Used in many cosmetic cream bases, PEG compounds, propylene glycol and other ingredients with the letters “eth” (like polyethylene glycol) can be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which may cause cancer.

  1. Petrolatum

Used in some hair products for shine and as a moisture barrier in some lip balms, lip sticks and moisturizers, petroleum products can be contaminated with polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which may cause cancer.

  1. Phthalates

Plasticizer is common in nail polish, hair spray, perfume and some personal care products. It is often listed as simply “Fragrance”, but this ingredient impairs the endocrine system and is linked to early breast development and infertility.

  1. Siloxanes

When shopping for skincare and beauty products, look for ingredients ending in “-siloxane” or “-methicone.” Used in a variety of cosmetics to soften, smooth and moisten, this is a suspected endocrine disrupter and reproductive toxicant (cyclotetrasiloxane).

  1. Sodium Laureth Sulfate

This prevalent ingredient may make your shampoos, cleansers and bubble baths foam, but it can also be contaminated with 1,4-dioxane, which may cause cancer. Be on the lookout for related chemical sodium lauryl sulfate and other ingredients with the letters “eth” (e.g., sodium laureth sulfate) as well.

  1. Triclosan

This suspected endocrine disrupter might contribute to antibiotic resistance in bacteria. It is often found in antibacterial cosmetics, such as toothpastes, cleansers and antiperspirants.

What’s the Best Exfoliant for Me?

Consistent exfoliation is the key to getting that soft, luminous skin we all want. But with so many different kinds of exfoliants to choose from, how do you know which ones are right for you?

The good news is the perfect exfoliant exists for every skin type. So whether you’re dealing with acne, aging, sensitivity or discoloration, make sure you work an exfoliant into your routine. (more…)

Alpha & Beta-Hydroxy Acids

Exfoliation is vital to skin health, yet it is often forgotten when developing a skin care regimen.

Exfoliation is the action of using mechanical (micro beads, cornmeal, pumice) or chemical (AHA’s) means to aid in skin cell shedding from the epidermis (outmost layer).  Skin cells are constantly regenerated, with new skin cells created in the dermis and old, dead skin cells shed from the epidermis. This process keeps skin clean and smooth, helps prevent pore clogging, and reduces acne breakouts.

How can exfoliation improve your skin?

  • Removes dead, dry skin cells to reveal healthy, smoother skin below.
  • Supports healthy skin cell function by increasing the rate of epidermal cell turnover.
  • Helps prevent the buildup of old cells associated with clogged pores and acne.
  • Helps fade discolorations, having more or an even skin tone.

Alpha-Hydroxy Acidsare naturally occurring acids, derived from the sugars from particular plants. Some examples are Glycolic Acid (sugar cane), Lactic Acid (ours is vegetable based), Tartaric Acid (grapes), Citric Acid (citrus fruits), Malic Acid (apples), and Mandelic Acid (bitter almonds). These acids work because their molecules are small enough (glycolic being the smallest) to penetrate the epidermis and reach the dermis layer.  By dissolving the cement holding dead skin cells together, they promote cell turnover by sloughing off dull, rough surface skin. Continued use results in softer, smoother skin, faded wrinkles, lightened skin discolorations, and decreased blemishes.

Beta-Hydroxy Acids (specifically Salicylic Acid) is the acid of choice to treat acne because of its unique ability to penetrate the follicle and trigger the shedding of clogged debris. Continued use keeps the pores clear, resulting in a reduction of blockages and breakouts.

The difference between Alpha and Beta Hydroxy Acids is their lipid (oil) solubility. Beta hydroxy acid is lipid soluble and alpha hydroxy is water soluble.   Because of this difference in properties, beta hydroxy acid is more effective on oily skin with blackheads and whiteheads because it can penetrate the sebum within a pore and exfoliate the dead skin cells inside.  Thus, the water-only soluble alpha hydroxy acids are effective on thickened, sun-damaged skin.  When both are formulated together they work in synergy to help with acne and clogged pores.

Antioxidants

What are Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are molecules that protect your body’s cells by neutralizing external forces (like the sun, air pollution, wind, extreme temperature,) and internal factors (like emotions, metabolism, or the presence of excess oxygen.) Common antioxidants are vitamins A, C, E, green tea and beta carotene, which assist in skin repair and the strengthening of blood vessels.

What are Free Radicals?
Free radicals are produced whenever the body “heats up” or burns fuel. When things burn, they are damaged. When free radicals attack healthy skin cells, the cells decay, resulting in moisture loss, fine lines, wrinkles, and uneven skin tone.

Do creams and serums make a difference?
Topically, the powerful antioxidant properties of vitamins C and E and have been proven to decrease the effects of the sun on the skin and have been shown to prevent further damage. Regular application is highly recommended for protecting your skin from free radical damage.

Antioxidants can be used as preservatives
Antioxidants extend the shelf life by reducing the rate of oxidation in oils that are prone to quick oxidization.  Oxidation is a chemical process that occurs when oils or other natural ingredients are exposed to oxygen.  Oxidation can cause a product to go rancid, or to become less effective.

Whether your goal is to preserve your youthful skin, reduce the appearance of large pores or fine lines, or manage uneven pigment, you can easily improve the health and vitality of your complexion with the use of various types of topical antioxidants.
